LG's curvy premium phone will be known as'Velvet'

LG isn't just hoping a new design speech will overtake one to its next smartphone; it thinks the name will, too. The company has revealed that its curved-edge premium phone is going to be named Velvet to convey its"smoothness and softness that is premium." Whether that badge has its intended effect, it'll represent a significant break for a business which has insisted on numeric naming schemes for the previous several years.

The change in design strategy reflects LG's goals for the telephone and, in the end, the business as a whole. Its mobile division has been struggling for quite a while, in part because its telephones have relied on novelty attributes like hands-free control or modules to stand out. With Velvet, it is obviously hoping that memorable designs and also the titles to suit will improve the company's fortunes.

Whether it does isn't clear. So far, LG has only talked about Velvet's fundamental design, which mates the curves with a"Raindrop" camera layout. Rumors also have pointed to an upper-mid-range layout that brings a Snapdragon 765 processor and 5G. This will not directly challenge flagships such as the Galaxy S20 or iPhone 11 Pro if those specs prove accurate. However, that could be the point -- rather than attempting to win the specs race, LG can offer a posh design at a more affordable price.
